[Printer-friendly page] #1334 Reads.

Tomorrow, May 10th is Mother's Day. I have a few ideas about motherhood that may make sense to you. OR NOT. My only credential is that I have been a mother several times. So I come by my opinion naturally, not academically.

1. Being of the female gender does not prepare one for motherhood.

2. Actually no one and nothing can prepare you. How do you put madness into words? As a girl, I longed for the idea of having a child. The reality was not even close! The mystery is why one would be willing to do it a second or third time. I have never been able to put that experience into words. The only thing that comes to mind is you would be willing to die for that squirmy little bit of life and you never thought you could do that for anyone. And when you look at that little miracle your smile rises from the pit of your stomach. As time goes on, you discover that you also need to pay attention to your own growth and development and it occurs to you that your child could be your biggest nightmare and your closest friend. I'll leave you to make of that what you will.
3. Motherhood has been overly praised (ad nauseum) and much maligned. Each mother's child has to figure out for him or herself what life is all about. That includes parents when they were children and as they grow into adulthood. As one takes on more and more responsibility, he or she needs to take into account what the cost of those actions will be. A decision needs to be made to pay the cost and here is where it gets hard: you can't change your mind mid stream. It is akin to being in the process of delivering that child and thinking, ‘do I really want to do this?'  No. No. Bad timing. And so in making the decision one agrees to pay all known and unknown costs. A decision binds you.  Even if you are not aware of it! You can't put it off for someone else to pay, even if you try. It won’t work.
4. The last thing I want to say is that the whole enterprise is a mystery and the only word that comes close to defining that mystery is LOVE. Being a mother is the BEST and Worst of all possible worlds.
