Want to be healthy to Age 100 and Beyond?

Posted by Josephine On May 19, 2009 - 11:34 AM

I think my contemporaries as well as younger and older friends will find the following report from U.S. News and World Report of interest and very informative:

10 health habits that will help you live to 100
Deborah Kotz | U.S. News & World Report
February 20, 2009

The biggest factor that determines how well you age is not your genes but how well you live. Not convinced? A new study published in the British Medical Journal of 20,000 British folks shows that you can cut your risk of having a stroke in half by doing the following four things: being active for 30 minutes a day, eating five daily servings of fruit and vegetables, and avoiding cigarettes and excess alcohol.

While those are some of the obvious steps you can take to age well, researchers have discovered that centenarians tend to share certain traits in how they eat, move about, and deal with stress--the sorts of things we can emulate to improve our own aging process. Of course, getting to age 100 is enormously more likely if your parents did. But, if your parents and grandparents were heavy smokers, they might have died prematurely without ever reaching their true potential lifespan, so go ahead and shoot for those triple digits.

Dick Chaney

Posted by Josephine On May 12, 2009 - 10:52 PM

Today, I sent the following letter to the Voice of the People of the Chicago Tribune:

I can see why Fox News or Rush Limbaugh would give Dick Chaney a podium to spew his lies and criticism of the current administration but why a network like CBS would host him (in a very soft interview) is beyond me.

May 10, 2009 MOTHER'S DAY

Posted by Josephine On May 09, 2009 - 01:34 PM

Tomorrow, May 10th is Mother's Day. I have a few ideas about motherhood that may make sense to you. OR NOT. My only credential is that I have been a mother several times. So I come by my opinion naturally, not academically.

1. Being of the female gender does not prepare one for motherhood.

You Gotta Love All Things Royal

Posted by Josephine On May 08, 2009 - 06:28 PM

Some of you may have seen a news item in last Sunday’s Chicago Tribune about a young couple discovered in their birthday suits, having a lusty sexual rump on the lawn of Windsor Castle. This sort of thing is wonderful raw material for what is known as ‘found poetry.’ A good example of this is what Saturday Night Live did last Fall during the presidential campaign with Sarah Palin’s comments. In that case they barely had to change a word for the satire to work.

The following is my attempt at ‘found poetry’ based on Sunday’s news item from London.

I’ve been obsessed with the notion of freedom for a long time. It has been even more important since I retired from paid employment. The right side bar on this home page is just a very small example of the kinds of things one feels free to do once retirement strikes. All those items are fairly easy to discern; once the obligation on one’s time has been discharged. But is that all there is to freedom?
