Of Elements and Bones by Jo Stewart

Accidents of fate!

No accidents

are accidental.

Mario meets Maria.

Sparks fly.

Shards of heat and light

in every direction,

the wind, the air, and the water

all complicit

in this non love affair.

No yin and yang.

No bread and butter.

No Rogers and Astaire.

He and she then me,

all from bones

buried deep in a Mediterranean

isle with a live volcano.

Fire and water

able to consume each other.

It has not escaped me,

water, bluer than the sky,

is at hand,

ever changing,

always the same

to bring and to take away

a source of death,

a miracle for life.

The ancestor’s bones

with scary photos

left behind immortal,

fertile earth rich with

lemons, olives, and grapes,

built strong, aesthetic

homes on two continents

and braved the seas

when opportunity called.

Mario and Maria

consumed each other.

Awesome and without accident!

Those bones are my legacy.

That fiery nature,

a gift from Etna passed on to me.

The gods of Mediterranean waters

wash over me, bring me to life,

sustain my soul,

give me peace,

parent me.
