The Lesson by Lillie Gylling

Has it been 65 years since I was that little girl in first grade?

I am sitting in that one room school house. All eight grades in one room. A row of seats for each class. A wood burning stove at the front of the room. When the teacher is busy teaching another row of students, I turn my head and start whispering to the little boy behind me.

The teacher looks in my direction and I am terrified. She says, "Lillian, if you want to talk so badly, sit in the same seat with him."

I am crushed, she looks so upset. I nearly cry as I crawl into the seat with him.

We don't say a word to each other.
