Smoking Madness by Loreilei J. Goldman

Lavor slinks down into his seat and I smell smoke. "Smoking again?" I say to him. The cigarette smell reminds me of madness. The nauseating aroma of old stale smoke reeks from pillar to post and lingers in the hallway, bedrooms, foyer, and the kitchen where my mother and brother lived. The smell remains and jumps up at me from the carpets as I kneel to clear away the mess. Butts in the corners of each room, wetted down and crumbling cigarettes thrown around towards the baseboards, never just in ashtrays. Some falling over the edge of the huge green glass ashtray. I guess that is the way it is when the mind has no boundaries. There are no receptacles to put things in, all of life becomes border-less.

Viceroy containers with butts inside, Viceroy and Kent packages with the blue-white emblem. Carleton and Viceroys for my mother and any kind of white smoking stick of smoke for my brother, Ronald.

They both coughed, the cigarette cough of damaged lungs. Ron's, yellow brown stained fingers from cigarettes smoked down to the ash, his fingers permanently discolored with dirty unkempt finger nails.

My brow tenses and my speech changes. I have trouble breathing and

I cough. I can feel the tension around my eyes as my eyes soak in the offensive smoke.

The green glass ashtray with four notches sits on the creme colored end table. To the right and left of it are piles of spilled over cigarettes. It upsets me so that I feel like throwing the whole thing threw the window..
